China pledges to reach carbon neutrality before 2060

Speaking to the United Nations General Assembly via video on Tuesday, President Xi Jinping announced that China plans to have its carbon emissions peak before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality before 2060.

Climate experts are expressing cautious optimism about the announcement, which suggests a stronger ambition to reduce carbon emissions from the world’s largest emitter.
